While South Korea still has room for improvement in terms of acceptance concerning the LGBTQIA+ community, many K-Pop groups and idols are attempting to make a positive change with their platform. One of those being MONSTA X.

The members of MONSTA X have, on multiple occasions, in some way, shown support and allyship to the LGBTQIA+ as well as defy gender roles. They continually ignore haters and instead show genuine love and compassion.

Here are 15 times when MONSTA X proved themselves to be true and authentic allies of the LGBTQIA+ community:

1. Their appreciation and respect for male MONBEBEs

In an interview with GQKihyun talked about their male fans and explained how liking MONSTA X as a group is no different than being a fan of anything else, like movies and actors.

It’s the same way when you see a good-looking actor on screen… You can say, ‘Wow. That’s a good-looking guy.’ And that’s how you become a fan.

2. When Joohoney and Wonho encouraged a gay fan

When a MONBEBE told them they were concerned that their parents would not accept them if they came out, both Wonho and Joohoney gave words of encouragement.

3. When Minhyuk accepted a fan’s pride flag at their Melbourne concert!

10. When MONSTA X explained their own definition of masculinity

In an interview with GQ, they were asked to define masculinity, to which I.M responded, “What is masculinity these days? I think it’s really hard to define it overall. Everyone has their own meaning.” The interviewer then asked specifically, “Where does your own sense of masculinity come from?”

You know, it’s … about loving yourself, caring about yourself. That’s first. And we don’t think that women should be like ‘this’ and men should be like ‘that.’

13. Their gender-neutral lyrics

The lyrics for Wonho’s “Losing You” is gender-neutral. MONSTA X’s English song “Got My Number” is as well and contains lyrics that can be interpreted to be LGBT+ friendly.

Everybody wants what they want, love who they love. I wouldn’t judge, and I can keep a secret.

15. Their music video themes

Many MONBEBEs believe the music video for “All In” contains LGBT+ themes. One theory suggests Hyungwon and Minhyuk are in a relationship. Despite experiencing homophobia and abuse from Hyungwon’s father (or another type of authority figure), they continue to stay together and fight for their relationship. Throughout the video, they show love and affection for one another.
