Recent research on river life resulted in the discovery that the Han River (also known as Hangang) in South Korea contains high amounts of the sexual performance-enhancing drug, Viagra.
The Han River stretches across most of Seoul, South Korea. It is a popular spot for exercise, dates, and picnics. However, a professor on the research team at Seoul National University‘s environmental studies faculty announced on May 14, 2021 that high traces of various sexual performance enhancers such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have been discovered in the river. The chemicals that have contaminated the river include Vardenafil, Sildenafil and Tadarafil.

In particular, the professor revealed that a higher amount of drug traces were found in the part of Han River closer to the Gangnam area compared to that of other areas. He suspects that it is as many entertainment establishments such as bars or private room salons illegally distribute such drugs to their customers. Gangnam is known to have the highest concentration of such establishments. It is likely the drugs were discharged through urine or improper disposal.

He recommends proper cleaning facilities be installed in order to protect river life and the environment. There are currently not enough studies to know if such drugs will affect the environment.
