Earlier today, the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2022 GRAMMYs Awards show (also known as the 64th GRAMMY Awards).

CEO Harvey Mason Jr. and Board of Trustees Chair Tammy Hurt revealed the nominees for the upcoming GRAMMYs with assistance from celebrities and artists. The music artists included K-Pop group BTS, musician Jon Batiste, four-time GRAMMY Award winner H.E.R., rock band Måneskin, singer-songwriter Carly Pearce, music artist Tayla Parx, singer-songwriter Billie Eilish, singer-songwriter FINNEAS, and more.

During the 2022 GRAMMYs Awards Show Nominations Livestream Event, CBS Mornings anchor Gayle King announced that BTS was nominated for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” for “Butter.” They are up against Coldplay‘s “Higher Power,” “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat featuring SZA, “I Get a Kick Out of You” by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, and “Lonely” by Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco.

After BTS’s one GRAMMY nomination was revealed, BTS appeared to announce another category of nominations: “Best Alternative Music Album.” The group read the nominees which are as follows: “Shore” by Fleet Foxes, “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” by Halsey, “Jubilee” by Japanese Breakfast, “Collapsed in Sunbeams” by Arlo Parks, and “Daddy’s Home” by St. Vincent.

While other artists were given multiple categories to announce the nominations, the seven BTS members had to take turns announcing the five nominees for this one category.

Still, that’s not what upset netizens the most regarding the Recording Academy’s treatment of BTS. Many noticed that while the other celebrity presenters were given descriptions under their name, BTS were not, despite being nominated for a GRAMMY the previous year.

this is still a group that’s been a 1 time nominee before today’s announcement. They didn’t even add that subtitle/caption for them. Other artists were given the caption if they were nominated or won the award…do they not give you a subtitle if you’ve only been nominated once? Do they usually only put the subtitle for you after you’ve been nominated more than once?

Not only were GRAMMY winners credited but so were other artists who have been nominated in the past, like Jon Batiste.

Believe it or not, but this is not the only apparent double standard against BTS. Others noticed that while announcers were shown reading with the listing of the nominees on-screen, BTS were not.

Instead, footage of BTS was shown right before the members read off the nominees. While the nominees were read, the nominees’ names, along with their albums, appeared on the screen. Afterward, BTS appeared again for their final message.

Måneskin was also treated similarly. Like BTS, they’re an international group (they are from Italy). The only difference is that they’ve not been nominated for a GRAMMY previously, which BTS has. Regardless, it would have been nice for all artists to be respected equally.

The live-streamed event began on a hopeful note as CEO Harvey Mason, Jr. preached a positive and inclusive message before announcing the changes the Recording Academy has made this year.

This is a new academy, one that is driven to action and that has doubled down on the commitment to meeting the needs of the music community… While change and progress are key drivers of our actions, one thing will always remain — the Grammy Award is the only peer-driven and peer-voted recognition in music. We are honored to work alongside the music community year-round to further refine and protect the integrity of the awards process.

Nevertheless, even with two new categories, things remained the same in regards to diversity. New categories “Best Global Music Performance” (Global Music Field) and “Best Música Urbana Album” (Latin Music Field) contributed to the total of 88 categories. Still, popular international music like K-Pop continues to be unrecognized by the Recording Academy, and netizens are taking notice.

Considering all of BTS’s accomplishments this year, breaking multiple records, it seems unbelievable that the group is not nominated for more.

The 2022 GRAMMY Awards will be on Monday, January 31, on CBC Television Network and Paramount+.
