Here’s The Unexpected Reason That One Particular Scene From “Squid Game” Was The Scariest To Film

When it comes to Netflix’s new show, Squid Game, it might seem like one of the most dangerous and nail-biting K-Dramas this year. Yet, the viewers and actors know that it isn’t real and can enjoy it knowing nobody was hurt or suffered a dark fate during filming.

In a recent video with The Swoon, the actors and directors revealed this wasn’t always the case. Although most of the challenges were filmed with green screens and required their acting skills to portray emotions, this wasn’t always the case!

For example, for the tug of war game, the actors really fell off a platform to imitate the feeling seen on the screen. Although they were wearing harnesses for safety, they would actually fall off the platform to showcase what viewers saw.

Yet, the scariest scene to film for many of the cast was the glass stepping stones game. Before the game, the characters had to choose a number that dictated the order in which they’d play. The players would then hop on glass tiles until they got to the end, and whereas some tiles would hold the players’ weight, others wouldn’t.

Actress Jung Ho Yeon, who plays Kang Sae Byeok, revealed that it was terrifying to film, adding how the directors had tried to make the set as realistic as possible. She explained that, rather than green screens and safety equipment, the actors were really elevated onto a platform and made to avoid gaps in the tempered glass.

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk seemed to relish in this fact, explaining just how they ensured the cast had authentic reactions while filming the daunting scene.

A mere 1.5 meters can make you frightened. The glass made them nervous, and I think we could express the unnoticed rigidity and fear of the body. It felt like seriously jumping off a high bridge.

He then explained why it was so important for the actors to really feel some sort of fear when they were filming, and it showcased just how dedicated the whole cast was to creating something that looked genuinely terrifying.

The game was real, and they felt real fear. Their bodies showed that fear, and we think that set had the power of realism.

With the cast and directors being so determined to perform with authenticity and face real fears, it is no surprise that it has quickly become not only one of the most popular K-Dramas but one of the most popular shows worldwide.
