For many of us, Korean entertainment, whether it’s K-Pop or K-Dramas, helped our lives in some way or another. Whether it was by connecting with others with similar interests or just forgetting one’s worries through a make-believe world, but for some, it’s both.

Reddit user Rosie (pitbulldofunk) revealed that K-Dramas had done more than just entertain their family. It actually “saved” them.

This is going to sound funny, but korean dramas really saved my family.

They explained that the situation in their country is not good right now. The president not only ignores the seriousness of COVID-19 but instills fear in the population, discouraging usage of masks, social distancing, and vaccination.

I’m Brazilian. I don’t know if you’re following the situation in my country, but our current president is an ignorant fascist who every day threatens a coup d’état. He ignored and minimized the pandemic to the point where we had more than half a million people dead, he discouraged the wearing of masks and social distancing, he put fear in the population about the vaccine (saying people would turn to alligators!).

The user was especially concerned for their mother. She was accepting the fake news being thrown at her every day. Still, even having almost died from COVID-19 herself, her opinions didn’t change and continued to be deep into conspiracy theories.

My mother is an extremely christian woman, she was bombarded with fake news every day and only knew how to talk about how the president was being wronged. She had covid last year and nearly died, but even that didn’t shake her faith.

According to a survey by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which was carried out in 18 countries by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange, Brazil ranked as the third-largest consumer of K-Dramas. The user’s mom contributed to this as she watched a lot as she stayed at home during the day.

As my mother stays at home all day, she ended up watching ‘Crash Landing On You’, a drama about a North Korean soldier who falls in love with a South Korean businesswoman (very good, by the way).

Ever since watching the hit tvN and Netflix K-Drama starring real-life couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin, the mother has completely replaced her consumption of news and conspiracy theories with K-Dramas as it’s now all she watches. While normally obsession with any type of entertainment isn’t good, it seemed to be for the better for this family.

Since then she’s been OBSESSED with k-dramas, she watches all day, knows all the actors and just forgot about the president and the conspiracy theories.

Now, the mom has developed an increasing love for all Korean entertainment. It’s also giving the family something to bond over. Currently, they are enjoying Girls Planet 999 together.

Yesterday she told me that she stopped following everything about politics and that she only wants to know about dramas and kpop. I finally managed to have a decent conversation with my mom without fighting over absurd theories and now we even have common tastes!

Rose shared the family’s story intending to help others. Previously, it seemed all hope was lost, but it was found thanks to an unexpected love for K-Dramas again.

I came to share this story with you to cheer you up, I thought my mother was lost once she marched with the president calling for a coup d’état in Brazil, but in the end, the Koreans ended up saving my family. There is hope, my friends!
