Ever heard the phrase, “The camera adds ten pounds?” It’s widely known that people often appear much different on camera than how they look in real life, and the same applies to idols too. As such, second-generation K-Pop idol Crayon Pop‘s Way says there are certain body types that look the best on screen—but perhaps not for the reasons you’d expect. Here are the five body types and features that suit the camera according to Way’s latest YouTube video.

1. Petite figures

First off, Way states that stars with petite figures tend to look the best on camera. On camera, she explains, “the body comes out exaggerated.” As such, she says that the stars you see with “glamorous” full proportions are actually usually much smaller in real life. As examples, Way named Lee Hyo Ri

…and Uhm Jung Hwa. While most see their figures as glamorous, Way says the first thing that comes to mind when she sees them in real life is, “Wow… they are very small and skinny.” Even Way herself says that many people think she must be chubby when they see her on-screen, she’s actually very petite.

2. Slim faces

The next feature that Way says looks best on camera is a slim face—but not too slim. Just as the camera makes idols’ bodies look bigger, it does the same to their faces. Way explains that when idols who naturally carry less fat on their faces appear on screen, they tend to look “lively and voluminous.” The exception, she says, is that particularly hollow cheeks with no face fat don’t look great on camera.

In reality, says Way, faces with more volume tend to look more beautiful, but this often doesn’t come out well on screen. Some stars Way says have much slimmer faces than they appear on camera include Honey Lee

3. Straight bones

Next up: bone structure. According to Way, “uncurvaceous legs” look best in photoshoots, while bowlegs stand out too much on camera. This is a problem Way herself has suffered from, despite feeling that her legs are actually quite straight. In order to combat this, she reveals, she tightens her knees and stiffens her legs—but it’s not easy.

But this doesn’t just apply to legs. Way went on to explain that square shoulders and straight collarbones are also considered “trendy” body shapes that look great on screen. “The upper body line has to be pretty to look pretty on the screen, says Way, “especially, idols wear a lot of revealing clothes like sleeveless or off-shoulder shirts.”

Stylists often try to combat low “hanger shoulders” with shoulder pads and similar clothing, but one idol who has naturally square shoulders and a straight collarbone is IU.

4. Full lower body

While Way says that more petite body types look best on camera, but that doesn’t mean weight has to be balanced across the whole body. For stars who do carry more weight on one end, Way says that idols who carry it on their lower body look come across better on screen. “In many cases cameras only show the upper body,” she added, going on to explain that you can more easily cover lower body weight with A-line or long skirts.

5. Long, thin limbs

And last but not least, Way says one of the most obvious features that looks good on camera is long, thin limbs. “If you have long arms, long legs, and long neck,” she says, “you will definitely look pretty on the screen.”

Way went on to say that long limbs can make idols appear taller on screen even if they’re small in real life. OH MY GIRL‘s YooA is one of Way’s examples since she is petite in height but has long arms, long legs, and a long neck.

Way also names aespa‘s Karina as an example of a star with thin bone structure in her limbs.
