5 Girl Group Songs That Became Huge Hits Despite The Members Not Liking Them

Even the biggest fans don’t usually love every song their favorite group releases, so perhaps it should come as no surprise that sometimes, the groups themselves aren’t keen either. What is surprising, however, is how many of these songs have gone on to become megahits — despite being hated by the members!

1. Girls’ Generation’s “Gee”

Despite always acing her lines, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon hasn’t always been the biggest fan of her group’s songs. In particular, she once revealed that she hated “Gee” from the moment she heard it — going as far as to cry over her dislike for it, according to fellow member Yuri!

Of course, that didn’t stop “Gee” from becoming one of the biggest K-Pop songs of all time. Most interestingly, Taeyeon eventually changed her opinion of the song. In an interview in 2021, she admitted that although she wanted to portray a more “fierce” concept back then, the concept of “Gee” was “perfect” for the members’ ages at the time.

2. Wonder Girls’ “Tell Me”

Another second-generation girl group song that’s stood the test of time is “Tell Me,” which went viral at the time of release for its catchy melody and iconic choreography. JYP Entertainment founder J.Y. Park wrote the retro hit himself, and there’s no doubt he impressed the Korean public.

The Wonder Girls members, however, were far less impressed. In fact, years after the song’s success, Sunmi revealed to J.Y. Park that the first time the members watched his demo choreography for “Tell Me,” they were in disbelief. Sunmi went on to explain that the reason she hated promoting the song is because she hadn’t lived through the era in question herself and therefore couldn’t understand the old-fashioned styling.

3. Miss A’s “Bad Girl, Good Girl”

“Tell Me” isn’t the only J.Y. Park hit that failed to make a good impression on the group that released it. Miss A’s members had similar qualms about “Bad Girl Good Girl.” The song topped the charts instantly, winning multiple awards, but the founder once revealed that Miss A hated it from the start.

During his admission, J.Y. Park explained that while singers give their best when they really love their songs, he didn’t think they should get a say right from the beginning. While his stance is controversial, the impact “Bad Girl Good Girl” had on Miss A’s career is undeniable.

4. MOMOLAND’s “BBoom BBoom”

To this day, “BBoom BBoom” is a beloved K-Pop hit among international fans. It did just as well in South Korea too, topping the Gaon Digital Chart and earning a platinum certification. But, despite how fun it is to listen to, two of the members hated it on the first listen.

JooE once divulged that all the members went silent upon hearing the song, but she and Nancy went one step further. They disliked the track so much, they corned their MLD Entertainment boss in his car and burst into tears, crying “We can’t do this!”

5. STAYC’s “Teddy Bear”

STAYC have a lot of faith in their production director Rado, and it’s no surprise why. Together, his production duo Black Eyed Pilseung has penned some of the biggest and most-loved K-Pop songs, including TWICE‘s “Fancy,” “Likey,” and “Cheer Up,” SISTAR‘s “Touch My Body,” and Apink‘s “I’m So Sick.” But, on an episode of Knowing Bros, the members admitted that their song “Teddy Bear” marked the first time they told Rado they were worried about promoting a track.

The members explained that they were concerned the song was too cute and wouldn’t work for the group, which is no surprise after STAYC had already taken a more mature turn with releases like “Beautiful Monster.” However, the public wasn’t fazed at all. “Teddy Bear” quickly climbed the charts and went on to score multiple awards and several music show wins.
