Why LE SSERAFIM Won’t Be Joining K-Pop’s “Group Greeting” Trend

LE SSERAFIM released their first English single, “Perfect Night,” in October and headed to the U.S. to promote their new song in New York and Los Angeles.

While in the United States, the group appeared on American radio personality Zach Sang‘s talk show, Zach Sang Show, and opened up about their close group dynamic, how they participated in the creation of their music, how the members joined the group and more.

As the interview began, LE SSERAFIM greeted viewers, and Zach Sang asked the group if they wanted to do their official introduction, adding that he didn’t want to mess it up.

Yunjin honestly replied that they “don’t really have an intro,” which Zach Sang noted was “really rare,” as many K-Pop groups have unique, synchronized greetings that are usually accompanied by hand signs.

Yunjin explained that the group didn’t have any “signature [greeting] or hand signal;” instead, they simply say, “Hi, we’re LE SSERAFIM.”

Zach Sang wondered if the group had decided not to have a signature greeting in order to disrupt the K-Pop standard, in reference to the group’s “fearless” concept, but Yunjin replied that it wasn’t a decision made to “break K-Pop rules.”

The LE SSERAFIM member shared that their company is receptive to their thoughts and ideas and had approached them about making a hand symbol before their debut. When Source Music asked the members if they wanted one, they respected the group’s opinion when they opted for a “neater” and simpler intro instead.

Zach Sang wanted to know if there was a specific reason they didn’t want one, and Sakura answered that they wanted the freedom to present themselves in different ways, and if they had created a signature group greeting from their debut, it would be something that followed them, unchanging, throughout their career.
