Concert for Jamboree attendees | The Korea HeraldOn August 17, a post titled “Jamboree Performance Fees For Idols Are Revealed” went viral.
In the post, a netizen uploaded an article alleging that idols who performed at the ill-fated 2023 World Scout Jamboree received a paltry ₩100,000 KRW (about $74.70 USD) for their efforts.
If the allegation is true, the fee is especially egregious considering that authorities received a reported ₩1.00 trillion KRW (about $747 million USD) subsidy for the event.
Allegations of embezzlement and misuse of funds plagued the event from its inception when attendees expressed alarm at the lack of preparation and overall poor accommodation.
The accusations have spilled over onto the nation’s politics as both the main opposition and ruling parties have been busy pointing fingers, sparking an investigation into how funds were used.

Netizens expressed outrage over the idol’s alleged performance fees, with many likening the government to thugs. While some casting doubt over the rumored fees due to it being so low.
- “The government are like thugs.”
- “They pay them on ₩100,000 KRW (about $74.70 USD) and then force Starship Entertainment and HYBE to cough up ₩8.00 billion KRW (about $5.98 million USD) and claim it was volunteered. Amazing.”
- “LOL, this is forced volunteering.”
- “It must have felt different for idols to receive the minimum wage for the first time.”
- “I knew they couldn’t pay idols college performance rates, but I thought they’d at least pay ₩1.00 million KRW (about $747 USD). The hair and makeup alone probably cost 300 million KRW.”
- “Wow, they are thugs. Those who voted for this president need to be beaten.”
- “But are you sure this is right? I searched the information but didn’t see anything. Are you sure this isn’t fake news?”
