HBO‘s The Idol found itself in the middle of another controversy.
Lily-Rose Depp | HBOOn June 16, news outlet The Guardian released an article examining cigarettes’ recent return to the bright lights of Hollywood.
| HBOIn their article, The Guardian cites the prevalence of cigarettes on The Idol writing about how Lily-Rose Depp‘s character smokes three cigarettes in the first five minutes.
In The Idol… Within the first five minutes, Lily-Rose Depp’s character, Jocelyn, smokes three cigarettes – yes, three – dressed in a red satin gown. It’s almost cartoonish.

The Guardian then calls out The Idol for the way they portray cigarettes as “Cool and sexy.”
The implication is clear: Jocelyn is cool and sexy. She can also absolutely smash a packet of cigs. And those two things are not unrelated.
