Netflix Korea’s Popular Reality Dating Show Faces Consequences For Filming On An Island Without Permission

A popular Korean Netflix reality dating show faces repercussions after setting up an unauthorized set while filming.

On May 31, it was revealed that the production team of the popular dating show illegally built the set in Saseungbongdo, an island in Incheon that was designated as a marine protected area in December 2003. The name of the Netflix show has not been revealed.

Ongjin County in Incheon claimed that the production team of the Netflix show was notified of the violation of building over ten temporary buildings, including the filming set installed in Saseungbongdo. According to the Act on Conservation and Management of Marine Ecology, it’s prohibited to construct buildings in marine protected areas—with the exception of buildings constructed for military purposes or emergencies.

However, it was confirmed that the production team built the structures without getting permission from the county. It was also revealed that they chose the island as the filming location for season 2 of the dating show and planned on filming season 3 here as well.

The Environmental Movement Federation stated that the filming set was causing serious damage to the coastal area and demanded strict supervision of the island. The county plans to visit the island on June 2 to confirm the violation and issue an order to remove the set. They are also considering filing a report with the police if the order is not followed.

Meanwhile, Sangseungbongdo is a popular filming location for variety programs; MBC‘s Infinite Challenge, KBS‘s 2 Days & 1 Night, and SBS‘s Law of the Jungle were all filmed on the island. Netflix’s hottest reality dating show, Single’s Inferno, was also filmed in Sangseungbongdo.
