Fresh from winning the Emmy Award for “Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series,” Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared that he has started working on the screenplay for Squid Game 2.
This he shared during a celebratory press conference following the Emmys win at the Westin Josun Seoul. “We will film the sequel next year, and the series will likely be released in 2024. I am working on the script right now,” Hwang said.

Asked about what games will be featured in the sequel, he preferred to keep it confidential. He asked for the audience’s indulgence, explaining that the games are a crucial element of the series to keep it entertaining.
Following the characters who do not know what games they will play makes the series fun. If I tell you that now then it will reduce the fun. So, even if it accidentally slips out of my mouth when we drink or something, please just tell me to keep my mouth shut.

He also discussed bringing back characters, some of who died in the previous season.
I really want to bring back Ji Yeong. And her close friend Sae Byeok died, too. I don’t know what I should do yet. So many players that were beloved by the audience all died. I did not know we would be this successful and killed them without a second thought.

It will be recalled that Ji Yeong and Sae Byeok’s friendship was one of the more poignant moments in the series. Lee You Mi, who played Ji-Yeong, also won the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award, bagging the award for “Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.”

Asked about the possibility of having Hollywood actors in the cast, the director said he would consider it if Squid Game would have a third season. However, he joked with the staff about adding Leonardo DiCaprio to the cast when he found out the actor was a fan of the series.
Hwang also shared that he considered filming another movie with the working title of K.O. Club, also known as Killing Old People Club. He decided against it, considering the gap between Squid Game seasons one and two would be too wide. He joked, “Also, actors, including Lee Jung Jae, will age too much, so I decided to do this project first.”
