Why Hollywood’s “K-Pop: Lost In America” Is The Movie K-Pop Fans Didn’t Ask For

In an exclusive report from Deadline, it was recently revealed that new Hollywood movie K-Pop: Lost In America is in the works, with stars Rebel Wilson and Charles Melton reportedly leading the cast.

According to Star News, ASTRO‘s Cha Eunwoo (also known as Cha Eun Woo) is also said to be in talks to star in the movie, potentially making this his Hollywood debut. Yet, while fans are excited to see Cha Eunwoo in a major Hollywood movie, reactions to K-Pop: Lost In America so far have been rather mixed.

The plot will center around a K-Pop boy group that is about to make their US debut in New York but then gets accidentally stranded in Texas. With seemingly no money or phones, the members must put their differences aside and find a way to get to New York in time for their debut in Madison Square Garden.
The movie is meant to be a comedy, but so far fans have expressed doubts about its premise and intended plot. While movies and TV shows can be expected to push the boundaries of realism, fans are questioning the believability of the characters being truly stranded with no technology…
…and no way of getting help.
And while the fact that the story will unfold in Texas has some fans amused, it is also leading to some questions about the casting—and more importantly, to questions about who the real protagonists of the story will be.
Similar concerns were raised when Seoul Girls (which was to be produced by Rebel Wilson) was announced in 2019. Fans questioned whether Rebel Wilson was the right person for the job, as well as whether the movie could be anything other than a cliche comedy that relies on stereotypes.
Now, K-Pop: Lost In America is being faced with the same concerns, as fans wonder just how authentic a Hollywood interpretation of K-Pop can be, and whether that interpretation can do justice to Korean people and Korean culture.
who on earth is the target audience supposed to be who genuinely wants to see hollywood's portrayal of what they perceive kpop to be and combine that with rebel wilson and texas https://t.co/u0TSm17hCk

Yet, despite the mixed feelings about the movie, there is no denying that seeing Cha Eunwoo make his Hollywood debut is still exciting. The idol himself has previously expressed his interest in acting in a Hollywood movie, so AROHAs are excited about seeing him achieve his goal.
Cha Eunwoo dropping subtle hints on interviews:
wanted a prince role = #RHGR

In fact, he may be the biggest point of interest so far!
It is rumored that GOT7‘s Jinyoung and MONSTA X‘s Joohoney might also be making their Hollywood debut alongside Cha Eunwoo, but while that is unconfirmed, fans are still skeptical given the premise of the movie.
For God's sake…. please script and him should stay away from each other not jinyoung pls pic.twitter.com/9yPJdFv70q

There’s a rumor that Jooheon has received an acting opportunity and some people are assuming it’s the Kpop movie with Rebel Wilson called “Kpop – Lost in America” and they’re already complaining about it bc the premise of the film sounds a bit silly.

Yet, with Cha Eunwoo’s involvement and with producer Mikey Lee (who also produced the Academy Award-winning movie Parasite) behind the wheel, the movie has the potential to be at least a fun ride!
