The Awkward Test (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon Had To Pass To Prove To Cube Entertainment That She Could Make It On “Unpretty Rapstar”

During a guest appearance on MBC‘s Radio Star, (G)I-DLE‘s Soyeon revealed that she had once been asked to prove she could make i in Unpretty Rapstar…by dissing one of Cube Entertainment‘s directors, all because the company was worried she was too nice to make it in the  show.

Soyeon featured in the third season of the show and ended up being one of the semi-finalists. At the time, she was a Produce 101 trainee and had not yet made her debut with (G)I-DLE.

Knowing that Soyeon would have to participate in a diss battle during the show, Cube Entertainment had held a meeting in which they expressed their concern that Soyeon’s personality was too nice. After all, her parents had raised her to always sympathize with others. At the meeting, the company asked her to diss one of the directors right then and there to prove that she could do the diss battle.

Afraid that she wouldn’t be able to do the show if she failed the test, Soyeon decided to be bold and go for it, even though she was normally intimidated by the director she was asked to diss.

: The CEO at the time told me to diss the director. I thought, if I don't do well here, I won't be able to go on . So I decided to be brazen-faced and do it. But in reality, if I could help it, I would always try to avoid her.

In fact, that particular director was the one Soyeon was most afraid of. But she toughened up and did her best to come up with a good diss rap to prove she could make it on Unpretty Rapstar.

: It was awkward to be around her and she would lecture me a lot. She was the director that I was the most afraid of. But I went ahead with the freestyle, "we always smile when we're in front of you. But we're talking smack when we're behind you."

Luckily for her, she got pretty far in the show, and has since then consistently proved she’s a talent truly worthy of recognition. She even counts PSY among her biggest fans, who was actually the one who requested that she be on Radio Star with him!
