BTS‘s performance at the 2022 GRAMMYs (also known as the 64th GRAMMY Awards) was epic, but it had much more meaning behind it than most viewers realized!
In an interview with Weverse Magazine, Ha Jung Jae, the Lead Professional at the Concert Production Studio, explained some of the details and hidden meanings included in BTS’s performance of “Butter” at the GRAMMYs.
Ha Jung Jae began by explaining the meaning behind the card V famously pulled out from behind singer Olivia Rodrigo‘s back.

He explained that the GRAMMYs performance was a nod to the fictional spy James Bond and the fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. In keeping with the theme, the story behind the card was that the members stole it to perform at the award show. Ha Jung Jae said, “The way they opened the stage was through a security card. They stole the card from a formally invited artist and gained entry that way.”

The theme also influenced the way the members entered the stage. Ha Jung Jae explained that a thief like Arsène Lupin wouldn’t make a grand entrance by appearing onstage. Instead, he would enter stealthily from where the audience sat or by appearing out of thin air. He said, “For a concept like the gentleman thief Lupin, it would be more likely they enter from somewhere other than the stage, like from the audience or from out of thin air, rather than making a grand entrance from on stage.”

Lastly, the lasers the members crawled through during their performance indicated that the security system was “automatically triggered” because they were in a “well-established, classy museum that demands high security.” The lasers also represented the adversity the members pushed through to get to where they are now.
