In a preview for next week’s episode of Dare U Naeju with Baekhyun, idol hairstylist Park Naeju quizzed the EXO star on his favorite and least favorite hair eras from his career. To keep fans watching, Park censored Baekhyun’s response. However, fans are convinced they’ve already worked out the answer: “Ko Ko Bop”.

Some say you can see and hear the final syllable “Bop” despite the censoring, while other fans have noted that this wouldn’t be the first time Baekhyun spoke up about his “Ko Ko Bop” hair. But why was the style so controversial?
If you don’t remember what Baekhyun’s hair looked like back in that 2017 era, here’s a reminder: the star stepped out in a red-streaked mullet.
Needless to say, mullets are one of the most polarizing hairstyles in K-Pop. Some people love them, while others think they’re an unwanted blast for the past. As such, many fans were taken aback when they first saw Baekhyun’s hair in his teasers for The War.
Since then, many stars have tried rocking their own mullets, including BTS‘s Jin,
NCT‘s Taeyong,
Stray Kids‘s Hyunjin,
and even fellow EXO member Chen, who grew out a mullet for “Tempo”.
However, back then, the style was still relatively unpopular. In the Dare U Naeju preview clip, Baekhyun lamented that the public’s responses to his “Ko Ko Bop” mullet “were not that positive“.

And, this not the first time Baekhyun has confessed that many fans weren’t in love with his mullet. Earlier this year, he shared a similar story on KBS‘s YouTube series, BOATTA. During the video, Baekhyun said he “loved this style“—from the cut to the highlights—and thought it would become a “huge thing” in the future.
However, he admitted that it ended up being one of the hairstyles that EXO fans didn’t like, leading him to promise never to attempt it again.
That said, despite Baekhyun facing criticism at the time, it seems international EXO-Ls have come to adore the style. Since the Dare U Naeju clip dropped on YouTube, fans have taken to social media to relive just how great it really looked.
